Our Tips to Optimize and Improve Search Engine Optimization with a Wix website

You know that SEO on Wix is a long-term job that requires patience and a lot of work. However, some simple operations can already help you gain positions on Google, and they’re free. Ready to boost your SEO? Let’s get started!

1 - Find Relevant Keywords for Your Business

First and foremost, you need to define your main keywords, i.e., the queries your potential customers will search for on search engines. For example, "Florist New York" or "Architect Los Angeles" or even "men's shoes."

Find Relevant Keywords for Your Business
Google Search Console

You can use your Google Search Console to see which keywords generate the most impressions (most searched) for your site or use Semrush, which is free with Wix (up to 10 keywords).

You can also extract keywords from your competitors' sites using free SEO tools like Ubersuggest or paid tools like Ahrefs. This way, you can discover some very interesting long-tail keywords.

This is an important process not to be neglected. If you optimize your site with the wrong keyword, you will waste time and be counterproductive.

2 - Optimize Your Title Tag

The title tag or meta title is the main text that appears in the Google search, above your domain name and page description (see below).

💡 This title tag is a very important SEO factor and must be optimized with your keyword.

For example, if you are a private driver in New York, let’s imagine a fictional company "Fast Cars," your title tag could be "Private Driver New York - Fast Cars - 24/7 Chauffeur." The keyword is placed first (it’s not a hard rule but often works), the business name second, and third, simply add a "shock" argument to entice the user to click (free quote, immediate booking, etc.) or a secondary keyword (like "chauffeur" which seems widely used by competitors). The hyphen is a recommended separator for Google, but you can also use the vertical bar " | " or pipe, which would give: Private Driver New York | Fast Cars.

To learn how to modify the title tag on Wix (it's super easy, even for dummies), it’s explained here.

The advantage of Wix, being a no-code CMS, is that you don’t need to be an expert coder to modify these HTML tags.

Note: Google may decide not to consider your meta title tag (very annoying) and modify it as they see fit.

3 - Optimize Your Page URL/Slug

The URL of your page is crucial (we’re not talking about the domain name here, but the page itself). As shown in the example above, these URLs are optimized with important keywords. In our fictional example, you could use www.fastcars.com/private-driver-new-york. However, if your domain name is already optimized like "private-driver-new-york.com," then it’s unnecessary to optimize the page URL further, as Google might not favor it. Here’s how to do it on Wix.

4 - Create a Relevant H1 Tag

H1 tag Wix example

This might seem the simplest task but is actually the most complex. When you have text on a page, Google doesn’t know which part is important and which isn’t. To provide this information, you need to "tag" your text with H1, H2, H3, etc. These header tags (hidden in the source code) are like a summary of your text:

  • H1 = Main Title

  • H2 = Secondary Title

  • H3 = Sub-title (up to H6)

The H1 tag is THE MOST IMPORTANT tag. It must be unique (one per page, different on each page) and indicates to Google what your page is about. For example, if you’re a private driver in New York, your H1 tag on the homepage could be "Fast Cars Private Driver in New York" (your name + your keyword).

5 - Add Quality Text Content (very important)

A page without content is worthless to Google (Content is King). Therefore, to properly rank your Wix site, you should add text, but not just any text!

If your site is a used car dealership, simply putting up beautiful car images and showcasing the available vehicles won’t be enough. You’ll need to make an effort to write at least 300 to 500 words to explain what your site is about!

Create text that presents your business, why choose you, your history, why your services or products are of quality, etc. The text must be UNIQUE (not copied/pasted from another site as duplicate content could penalize you), and you should mention the important keywords of your business (without excessively repeating them). Each page should have its own relevant text (see site structure in the next step).

Writing SEO-oriented content is an art that requires rigor and experience. If you don’t feel up to it, you can hire a freelance writer or a specialized Wix SEO agency (like SEO Bragger 😄). The texts should be interesting for your audience and semantically optimized for Google, a balance that isn’t always easy to achieve.

6 - Rename Your Images and Fill in the Alt Text Tag

Now that your texts are top-notch (if you followed the previous step), you need to take care of your Wix site images.

Our first advice: always rename your images by inserting keywords, for example, "florist-new-york.jpeg" instead of "IMG123.jpeg." This is not a detail; the file names are visible in your site’s source code, even on Wix.

alt text Wix

Second important advice: correctly fill in the Alt Text tag, which allows you to describe your image for search engines. If you have several images on your page, vary the keywords and try to stay descriptive of the image content. For example, "Florist New York" for the first image, "flower shop in New York" for the second image, "flower bouquet," etc. Don’t repeat your main keyword excessively!

To fill in the alt text tag on Wix, click on your image, then on the small "settings" symbol. In the window that opens, write your text (keywords) in the "What does the image show? Tell Google" space.

7 - Structure Your Site with One Page per Service

This is a crucial step in SEO for Wix: the site structure. The best advice we can give you is this: create a page for each of your services; do not group all your services on a single page (often the homepage). For Google, one page = one keyword (one broad theme). So, think carefully about your website’s structure.

A simple example: you are a plumber and offer the following services: drain cleaning, bathroom renovation, heating repair. You should create a page for EACH service you offer (so here, 3 pages) in addition to your homepage.

Let’s put this into practice with the previous steps' advice:

Your homepage will be optimized for the keyword "plumber new york" with the following metadata:

  • Title: Plumber in New York - John Doe

  • URL: /plumber-new-york

  • H1 Tag: Trust John Doe, Your New York Plumber

Your service "sub-page" will be optimized for a more specific keyword with the following metadata:

  • Title: Heating Repair & Maintenance in New York - John Doe

  • URL: /heating-repair-new-york

  • H1 Tag: Hire a Plumber Specialized in Heating Repair in New York

And so on!

For Google, this will significantly help because you’ll have a much better chance of appearing on the first page for "heating repair" with a dedicated page than if you had "buried" this content in your main page.

You can even create more relevant sub-sections, for example, if you repair a specific brand of heaters, by creating a new sub-page/landing page for each brand (and internally linking to these pages only from the heating page). This is the principle of a silo structure (link network between pages of the same theme).

You can also create a page per city for local services (and it works very well).

The principle to remember is simple: create a page for each different "theme," avoid "catch-all" pages that gather too much information.

All these pages don’t necessarily have to be visible in your main menu. When numerous, they can be found in the footer of your Wix site (at the bottom of the site).

8 - Implement Good Internal Linking

To avoid your Wix site being seen as a "dead end," it’s important to place internal links (to other pages on your site) as well as external links (to other relevant sites).

Regarding external links, in short, if your site talks about a subject, it’s beneficial to send your readers to other authoritative sites on that subject. For example, if you are a taxi service near New York airport, you can link to the official airport website. This will greatly benefit the trust that Google places in your site!

For internal links (internal linking), it’s simple: they are already present by default in your menu (links to your "about" or "contact" page), but that’s not enough. You need to place them (sparingly) in your texts.

For example: "our company is very experienced, discover our story" and you include a link to the "our story" page. Simple, right?

This internal netlinking will be very beneficial for your Wix website, simplifying user navigation and understanding your site structure for Google bots.

Regularly Update Your Content

9 - Regularly Update Your Content

According to Google’s QDF (Query Deserves Freshness) algorithm, your content should remain "fresh," i.e., updated regularly.

If you manage to rank your site first but make no modifications for several months (or years), it will eventually drop in the results 😟

Setting up a blog (on Wix, it’s very simple) and publishing regular news is an excellent way to send this desired "freshness" signal to Google.

Like a plant, your site needs to be "watered" with content (text, to be simple) to grow! If you stop feeding it, it will eventually wither and get lost in the depths of Google’s 10th page!

10 - Netlinking: Obtain Backlinks to Your Site (The Most Difficult Step)

This is the final step but the most challenging for beginners!

Know that SEO relies on two pillars: on-site or on-page SEO, which is the content on your site, and off-site or off-page SEO, which is your site’s popularity. This cannot be managed from the Wix editor! For your site to be seen as "popular" in the eyes of Google and search engines in general, you need to obtain backlinks. This will also facilitate the indexing of your pages.

What is a backlink? A backlink is a link pointing to your site from another site. In other words, when your Wix site is shared elsewhere on the Internet, it creates a backlink.

Search engines, particularly Google, detect these links and use these mentions to evaluate your site’s relevance and authority. The more your address appears on different sources, the more your Wix site is considered interesting and worthy of appearing in the top search results. Clear enough?

How to get backlinks for my Wix website?

You can view your site's (or competitors') backlinks for free with Ahrefs' backlink checker.

Imagine backlinks as votes: the more you have, the more Google thinks you deserve to be at the top. However, quality trumps quantity. It’s better to have a few powerful and highly relevant links than many low-quality ones (which can instead penalize you).

Now that you understand what a backlink is and its usefulness for propelling your Wix site to the top of the SERP (search pages), know that Google recommends only obtaining links naturally, without soliciting them. You will have to create interesting content (blog posts, guides) for it to be naturally shared by users. But in reality, this can take a very long time.

Another method is to buy backlinks or publish them yourself. This is considered "cheating" by Google (Black Hat technique), but it’s extremely effective (when done right)!

These methods to create artificial links (netlinking strategy) are varied:

• Link Exchange:

Ask partners, clients, or suppliers for links in exchange for a link to their site. You can use a link exchange platform. By allowing quality-similar sites to share links reciprocally, link exchange (sparingly) can increase your site’s relevance and authority in search engines' eyes.

• Posting on Forums (Ninja Linking):

You can post on thematic forums to place a link to your site (in a forum discussion page or your profile page). This method is called ninja linking. It’s quite effective (if the directories are in your niche) but can become laborious if done manually.

• Mentions in the Media:

Target local press (easy to obtain), online newspapers, and magazines in your theme. Prepare a press release to make journalists’ job easier, with clear and impactful language elements. You can hire a press officer for this (it’s usually expensive).

• Directory Registration:

Use this method cautiously, as low-quality directories can penalize your site. Prefer specific niche directories for your trade/activity, and avoid generalist "catch-all" directories..

• Creating Free Blogs:

Create blogs on free platforms like Blogger, Tumblr, Medium or even free Wix or Jimdo sites to place links to your site. It’s free and easy to do, but these links aren’t very powerful (you need to create a complete blog with many well-ranked articles for the link to become interesting, which is a lot of work).

• Expired Domains:

Buy an expired domain to retrieve its old backlinks. With this method, you can get very powerful links from major sites and benefit from an age that will appeal to Google.

• Paid and Sponsored Links:

Buy quality links on major media sites, but keep in mind that this requires a budget and SEO expertise.

⚠️ Don’t engage in these operations without knowing the risks. If Google detects your artificial links, it can be counterproductive (an algorithm called Penguin detects bad links and can penalize your site). You’ve been warned!
