Gemini: Will Google's AI Replace Traditional Search?

To counter the immense success of ChatGPT and Microsoft's innovations with their conversational robot on Bing, Google has decided to dive headfirst into the world of artificial intelligence. Gemini is Google's new promise, and we're here to tell you about the impact this AI revolution could have on natural referencing and web search in the future.

Bard Becomes Gemini: The Story of a Bad Name

Gemini replaces "Bard," which launched in February 2023. Apparently, the product didn't have a "catchy" enough name to dethrone ChatGPT. Now, we must call Google's new AI Gemini.

First off, we love the name "Gemini." Not only does it feature the iconic "G" of Google, but it also evokes Pinocchio’s little Jiminy cricket, the cute assistant in your pocket helping you daily (and stopping you from lying, a risky promise for an AI 🤥).

Naming a product is no small feat, and it's surprising that a company as significant as Google botched its strategy to the point of renaming the product after barely a year. But better to correct the course while there’s still time!

Gemini is an LLM (Large Language Model)

Gemini is the name of the language model (LLM) developed by Google (already partially present in Bard). It’s a multimodal LLM, LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications), meaning Gemini can create text, images, and even code (much like ChatGPT).

Like OpenAI's GPT-4, the latest model behind ChatGPT, Google engineers have trained LaMDA on billions of parameters and data, enabling the AI to learn natural language independently. The result is a chatbot capable of answering any question naturally, like conversing with a human—it's truly impressive!

Announced first in 2021 during the Google I/O conference, LaMDA remained a secret prototype until now. But with the arrival of ChatGPT in 2022, Google couldn't resist the temptation to create its own chatbot powered by its technology to compete with this new rival!

Google announced Bard in February 2023 and is now continuing its AI breakthrough with the latest version of Gemini, announced on May 14, 2024, by Google CEO Sundar Pichai at the Google I/O '24 conference (video below).

The operation is simple, like a conversation with a human: you ask a question, and Gemini answers!

In its latest update, Gemini introduced revolutionary features that promise to transform the landscape of online search. Notably, Gemini can now generate enriched responses that integrate visual elements such as charts and images, making information not only more accessible but also more engaging for users.

Moreover, Gemini has enhanced its ability to understand and process natural language, allowing for nearly human-like interaction that facilitates smooth and natural communication.

Goodbye Classic Google Search? Hello AI Conversation

Now that you understand what Gemini is and how it works, we must consider its potentially revolutionary impact on the future of the internet. Google, the world leader in search engines, is integrating an intelligent conversational robot that will likely change how users search online.

Say goodbye to classic Google searches; users will get direct, synthesized answers from the AI. This is called Google SGE (Search Generative Experience) or Generative AI. Users looking for the best nearby hotel or a recipe will no longer need to visit a comparison site or a cooking blog—Gemini will immediately provide all the answers. A bit scary, right? This novelty already raises legitimate concerns, especially about the quality of the provided answers. Website publishers also fear losing a lot of traffic (which is understandable).

What Impact on Traditional SEO? How to Be Present on Google Gemini?

Google is dead, long live Gemini! If this tool becomes as popular as we can hope (or fear), it will radically change how businesses get referenced on the web.

Currently, the goal for any business is to be visible in the top search results on Google or even in the zero position, but with AI-generated answers, Google will only give one response or a very limited list of options.

So, how do you get referenced on Google Gemini or ChatGPT, you ask? Fortunately for SEO professionals (like us 😄), it’s important to know that the Gemini AI draws its answers from... Google!

So, if your business, service, or product is well-presented on Google, you should theoretically have no trouble being visible on Gemini!

However, beware, the AI will base its answers on various sources. If you're looking for the best cocktail bar in Paris, the assistant will use a ranking from a blog or a site like Tripadvisor to give its results. You will need to work to get your bar at the top of these rankings!

The job of an SEO consultant or SEO agency isn’t dead; you’ll need to juggle traditional SEO methods, netlinking, sponsored article purchases, and press relations to maintain your visibility through your site and external sites. Google My Business listings will also be crucial for local results.

This new way of working in synergy with AI is called SAIO, Search Artificial Intelligence Optimization.

SEA will also adapt to offer "sponsored answers" on Google Gemini (with the same principle as Google Ads).

Using Gemini or ChatGPT to Optimize Your SEO: New Possibilities

From the user’s perspective, it should be noted that Gemini, like its competitor ChatGPT, can help you improve your website pages for better organic search rankings.

Keyword Research

AI is primarily a system fed with words, texts, and lexical fields, so this type of chatbot will be the perfect assistant to help you find relevant keywords for your business.

Since Gemini is designed by Google and has access to certain information, it will be particularly relevant for suggesting keywords.

Content Writing

Of course, writing optimized content (with the right keywords) is an ideal use of these tools for those looking to improve their organic rankings. Writing texts with the help of AI is already a well-established trend among SEO experts and freelance writers. These AI-powered tools can also help you improve your metadata. Use prompts like "Improve this text for SEO" (for a Title or description tag, for example) and see how the chatbot can work wonders.

Translation

Translation software has cause for concern because Gemini is an excellent translator in all languages! You can thus translate your content and target an international audience.

Coding (JavaScript, Python)

It’s also worth noting that these conversational modules can generate code in complex programming languages like JavaScript, C++, or Python. This code can help you develop web pages or automate certain SEO processes.

So, we can say that Gemini is both a blessing and a curse for SEO; it helps you rank better but might (possibly) render all "classic" SEO redundant. It’s a bit like a dog chasing its tail!
